A RESOLUTION
1Honoring Mark Nordenberg, Chancellor of the University of
2Pittsburgh, for his many years of service to the university
3and the Greater Pittsburgh region.
4WHEREAS, Born in Minnesota, Chancellor Nordenberg first came
5to the Steel City as a high school senior when his father's job
6was transferred; and
7WHEREAS, Although he eventually moved, Chancellor Nordenberg
8came back to Pittsburgh and joined the faculty of the University
9of Pittsburgh Law School in 1977; and
10WHEREAS, Excelling in the classroom, Chancellor Nordenberg
11was the first recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, now
12presented annually by the law school's graduating class; and
13WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg was one of the first
14University of Pittsburgh faculty members to receive the
1Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award, recognizing teaching
2excellence university-wide; and
3WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg would eventually serve the
4university in a number of different capacities, including Dean
5of the School of Law, Interim Provost of the University and
6Distinguished Service Professor; and
7WHEREAS, In 1995, Chancellor Nordenberg was elected Interim
8Chancellor by the university's board of trustees, and in 1996,
9following a national search, was formally elected chancellor;
10and
11WHEREAS, Last year, Chancellor Nordenberg announced that he
12would step down in the summer of 2014, following 19 years in
13this position; and
14WHEREAS, Under Chancellor Nordenberg's tenure, enrollment has
15increased by over 20%, SAT college entrance exam score
16requirements have risen over 180 points and the university's
17endowment has increased six-fold; and
18WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh is among the nation's
19leading producers of Fulbright Scholars, Boren Scholars,
20Whitaker International Fellows, National Science Foundation
21Fellows, Critical Language Scholars and Humanity in Action
22Scholars; and
23WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh now ranks fifth among
24all American universities in Federal science and engineering
25research and development support, obtained by members of its
26faculty; and
27WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg has cultivated strong
28partnerships with both the University of Pittsburgh Medical
29Center and Carnegie Mellon University; and
30WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh continues to be an
1academic and economic powerhouse in western Pennsylvania; and
2WHEREAS, Annually, more than $1.3 billion in personal income
3is generated in the region from over 30,000 University of
4Pittsburgh-supported jobs; and
5WHEREAS, In recognition of his many accomplishments,
6Chancellor Nordenberg has received many awards including the
7Homer S. Brown Law Association's Spirit Award, Community College
8of Allegheny County's Legend in Leadership Award, the Pittsburgh
9Area Jewish Committee's Community Impact Award and the Johnson
10Institute for Responsible Leadership's Exemplary Leader Award;
11and
12WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg has also been named
13Pittsburgh's Person of the Year by Pittsburgh Magazine and a
14History Maker by the Senator John Heinz History Center; and
15WHEREAS, Aside from his commitment to the university,
16Chancellor Nordenberg has also been very active in the Greater
17Pittsburgh region, including chairing a committee that examined
18issues of leadership and governance in the Pittsburgh Public
19Schools; and
20WHEREAS, Chancellor Nordenberg has successfully led the
21University of Pittsburgh for nearly two decades and will
22continue to serve the community after he steps down as
23Chancellor; therefore be it
24RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Chancellor
25Mark Nordenberg for his many years of service to the University
26of Pittsburgh and the Greater Pittsburgh region.
