A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating January 2014 as "School Director Recognition Month"
2in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Local school districts and their governing boards
4were established by the General Assembly more than 150 years
5ago; and

6WHEREAS, Public education is mandated by section 14 of
7Article III of the Constitution of Pennsylvania; and

8WHEREAS, School board members govern individual school
9districts, establish local policies, approve educational
10programs, provide necessary physical facilities, hire properly
11certified professional and classified employees and share in
12costs by raising necessary local funds used, along with State
13funds to operate district educational programs; and

14WHEREAS, Being an effective school director is a difficult

1task, particularly in the current climate of school change; and

2WHEREAS, A lay school leader must be knowledgeable about many
3complex educational and social issues; and

4WHEREAS, School board service is a pure form of grass-roots
5democratic principles upon which our republic was founded; and

6WHEREAS, Local public school directors are dedicated,
7educated and responsible citizens who carry out volunteer public
8service, a true form of representative government in our
9democracy; therefore be it

10RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
11month of January 2014 as "School Director Recognition Month" in
12Pennsylvania; and be it further

13RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
14the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
