A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the Night
2of Broken Glass, in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, November 9 and November 10, 2013, marks the 75th
4anniversary of Kristallnacht, a pogrom authorized by Nazi party
5officials and carried out by paramilitary forces, members of the
6Sturmabteilungen (SA) and Schutzstaffel (SS), as well as Hitler
7Youth and non-Jewish civilians; and
8WHEREAS, Kristallnacht marked the Nazi party's first large-
9scale violent anti-Semitic operation and a crucial turning point
10in Nazi anti-Semitic policy; and
11WHEREAS, During Kristallnacht, synagogues, homes and
12businesses in Jewish communities throughout Nazi Germany and
13parts of Austria were attacked, resulting in murders and arrests
14of Jewish people in Germany and in Austrian and Czechoslovakian
15territories controlled by the Nazis; and
1WHEREAS, The events of Kristallnacht resulted in the burning,
2damage and destruction of hundreds of synagogues, the looting of
3thousands of businesses and homes, the desecration of Jewish
4cemeteries, the murder of 91 Jewish people and the arrest and
5deportation of 30,000 Jewish men to concentration camps; and
6WHEREAS, The shards of broken glass from the windows of
7synagogues, Jewish homes and Jewish-owned businesses ransacked
8during the violence that littered the streets led to the
9pogrom's name of Kristallnacht, commonly translated as the Night
10of Broken Glass; and
11WHEREAS, Kristallnacht proved to be a critical turning point
12in the Holocaust, marking a shift from a policy of removing
13Jewish people from Germany and German-occupied lands to
14murdering millions of people, and was a tragic precursor to
15World War II; and
16WHEREAS, Despite numerous global efforts to eradicate hate,
17manifestations of anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance
18continue to harm our societies on a global scale; and
19WHEREAS, The lessons of Kristallnacht highlight how hate can
20proliferate and erode our societies and serve as a reminder that
21we must advance global efforts to ensure such barbarism and mass
22murder never occur again; therefore be it
23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
2475th anniversary of Kristallnacht; and be it further
25RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay tribute to
26the more than 6,000,000 Jewish people killed during the
27Holocaust and the families affected by the tragedy; and be it
28further
29RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, together with
30all United States citizens, continue efforts to address the
1horrible legacy of the Holocaust and combat manifestations of
2anti-Semitism domestically and globally; and be it further
3RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
4the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center, 10100
5Jamison Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19116, to Holocaust education
6programs in colleges throughout Pennsylvania, to the Secretary
7of Education and to members of the Human Relations Commission.
