A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing November 21, 2013, as "The Great American Smokeout
2Day" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, Smoking, secondhand smoke and broader tobacco
4marketing were commonplace in the 1970s when annual Great
5American Smokeout events were first observed; and

6WHEREAS, Today more than 43 million people in the United
7States smoke cigarettes, and 15 million others smoke tobacco in
8cigars or pipes; and

9WHEREAS, Smoking is believed to cause 1 in 5 deaths from all
10causes and nearly 1 in 3 deaths from cancer; and

11WHEREAS, Millions of Americans are living with serious
12tobacco-related illnesses; and

13WHEREAS, Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, The Great
14American Smokeout is held each year on the third Thursday of
15November to create awareness of addiction and tobacco-related

1diseases and deaths to promote further regulation of tobacco
2products and to help smokers quit; and

3WHEREAS, Research has shown that smokers have greater success
4quitting smoking when they have appropriate support; and

5WHEREAS, Smoking cessation is more readily attained when
6smokers use two or more of these recommended measures: support
7groups, online groups, counseling, nicotine replacement,
8prescription medicine, guide books and encouragement from
9friends and family members; and

10WHEREAS, The House of Representatives, noting the dangers of
11tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke, is committed to
12the prevention and cessation of smoking and other tobacco use;
13therefore be it

14RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
15November 21, 2013, as "The Great American Smokeout Day" in
16Pennsylvania.
