A RESOLUTION

 

1Designating September 20, 2013, as "Chestnuthill Township of
2Monroe County 250th Anniversary Day" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, The citizens living north of the Blue Mountain
4successfully petitioned for the creation of local government
5leading to the establishment of Chestnuthill Township in 1763,
6which was at the time a portion of Northampton County,
7Providence of Pennsylvania; and

8WHEREAS, The earliest surviving reference to the founding of
9Chestnuthill Township appears in the Quarter Sessions Docket of
10Northampton County on September 20, 1763, when Abraham Schmidt,
11also known as Abraham Smith, was appointed constable of
12Chestnuthill Township; and

13WHEREAS, Chestnuthill Township was subdivided in 1817 with
14its southern half becoming Ross Township, and in 1846
15Chestnuthill Township was further divided with its western half

1becoming Polk Township, and Ross Township was subdivided in 1851
2with its western half becoming Eldred Township; and

3WHEREAS, These four townships are today also known as the
4West End of Monroe County, established in 1836; and

5WHEREAS, The municipalities, citizens and historical
6societies of the West End have joined together to celebrate the
7250th anniversary of this occasion; therefore be it

8RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate
9September 20, 2013, as "Chestnuthill Township of Monroe County
10250th Anniversary Day" and join its citizens in their
11celebration of the founding of Chestnuthill Township and offer
12best wishes for continued success in its next 250 years.
