A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity during the Conclave 2013
2celebration from July 9 through 14, 2013, in Philadelphia.

3WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard
4University in Washington, DC, on January 9, 1914, by three young
5African-American male students; and

6WHEREAS, The founders of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Honorable
7A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse and Honorable
8Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek-letter fraternity
9that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood,
10scholarship and service and that viewed itself as "a part of"
11the general community rather than "apart from" the general
12community; and

13WHEREAS, These founders desired for their fraternity to exist
14as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to
15the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we" and would
16deliver services to the general community; and

1WHEREAS, Rather than gaining skills to be utilized
2exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they
3held a deep conviction that they should return their newly
4acquired skills to the communities from which they had come and
5this deep conviction was mirrored in the fraternity's motto,
6"Culture for Service and Service for Humanity"; and

7WHEREAS, Today, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has blossomed into
8an international organization of leaders with a membership of
9more than 150,000 college-educated men, operating in 675
10chapters around the globe; and

11WHEREAS, The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity reaffirm
12and maintain a strong commitment to brotherhood, scholarship and
13service and ensure that the fraternity programs are focused and
14committed to serving humanity; and

15WHEREAS, The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity executive team for
162009-2013 has embraced as its theme "Changing Lives Through
17Service"; and

18WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will be holding its 71st
19Conclave from July 9 through 14, 2013, in Philadelphia with the
20theme "POWER UP! Marching Towards the Jubilee"; and

21WHEREAS, The Conclave is a week-long conference for the
22purpose of electing an administrative body and holding concerts,
23seminars and other social events for delegates from the seven
24regions of the fraternity; therefore be it

25RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the Phi
26Beta Sigma Fraternity during the Conclave 2013 celebration from
27July 9 through 14, 2013, in Philadelphia.
