A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing the week of November 17 through 23, 2013, as "Hunger
2and Homelessness Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, The National Coalition for the Homeless and the
4National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness
5cosponsor "National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week" each
6year during the week prior to Thanksgiving; and
7WHEREAS, Coordinated activities take place during this week
8to promote education, service and action domestically and
9internationally with the aim of ending hunger and homelessness
10and strengthening individuals and communities; and
11WHEREAS, The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates
12that there are 3.5 million homeless persons in the United
13States, and the number is increasing due to joblessness and a
14shortage of available housing; and
1WHEREAS, In Pennsylvania, the United States Department of
2Agriculture reports that 494,600, or 10% of Pennsylvania
3households, experience hunger; therefore be it
4RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
5week of November 17 through 23, 2013, as "Hunger and
6Homelessness Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and urge
7Pennsylvanians to gain a greater awareness of the problems of
8hunger and homelessness in their communities and this
9Commonwealth.
