A RESOLUTION
1Celebrating the confirmation of the Honorable Nitza I. Quiñones
2Alejandro and congratulating her on becoming the first Latin-
3American Federal judge on the United States District Court
4for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
5WHEREAS, On June 13, 2013, the United States Senate voted to
6confirm the Honorable Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro to the United
7States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania;
8and
9WHEREAS, Ms. Alejandro was nominated by President Barack
10Obama on January 4, 2013, to a seat vacated by Richard Barclay
11Surrick; and
12WHEREAS, When speaking at a reception at the White House,
13President Obama congratulated Ms. Alejandro on her confirmation
14by the Senate; and
15WHEREAS, On the floor of the Senate, Senator Bob Casey said
16Nitza I. Alejandro is "a great American story," noting that she
17had been born and educated in Puerto Rico; and
1WHEREAS, Ms. Alejandro was born in 1951 in Hato Rey, Puerto
2Rico; and
3WHEREAS, Ms. Alejandro earned a bachelor of Business
4Administration degree and a law degree from the University of
5Puerto Rico; and
6WHEREAS, Ms. Alejandro worked with Community Legal Services
7in Philadelphia from 1975 to 1977, was an adviser for the United
8States Department of Health and Human Services from 1977 to 1979
9and was a staff attorney for what is now the United States
10Department of Veterans Affairs from 1979 to 1991; and
11WHEREAS, Ms. Alejandro was nominated by Governor Robert P.
12Casey to a vacancy on the Philadelphia County Court of Common
13Pleas in 1991 and was then elected to two ten-year terms; and
14WHEREAS, In 2012, during a hearing, Ms. Alejandro stated that
15the most important quality for a judge to possess is integrity;
16and
17WHEREAS, As an individual who possesses qualities such as
18being a good listener, having patience and fairness, being
19impartial, courteous, reasonable, ethical and decisive, Nitza I.
20Quiñones Alejandro will serve as a highly qualified
21representative of the Latin-American community to this great
22nation; therefore be it
23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the
24confirmation of the Honorable Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro to the
25United States District Court for the Eastern District of
26Pennsylvania and congratulate her on being the first Latin-
27American to do so.
