A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the life of the Honorable Charles Warren Stone on the
2170th anniversary of his birth.

3WHEREAS, The Honorable Charles Warren Stone was born on June
429, 1843, near Groton, Massachusetts; and

5WHEREAS, After attending Lawrence Academy and Williams
6College, he moved to this Commonwealth in 1863; and

7WHEREAS, Mr. Stone accepted a position as principal of the
8Union School in Warren and was later elected superintendent of
9the schools of Warren County; and

10WHEREAS, The same year that he was elected superintendent, he
11was chosen to serve as principal of the academy at Erie; and

12WHEREAS, While teaching school, Mr. Stone studied law and was
13admitted to the Warren County bar in 1866; and

14WHEREAS, On January 30, 1868, Mr. Stone married Elizabeth
15Moorehead and together they had six children; and

16WHEREAS, During this time, Mr. Stone was very active in his

1community and served as a member of the borough council for
2three years and as a member of the board of school directors for
3nine years; and

4WHEREAS, Due to his exceptional performance of his duties on
5the board of school directors, he was nominated as a candidate
6to the House of Representatives of this Commonwealth and was
7elected in 1869; and

8WHEREAS, In 1876, he was elected to the Senate of this
9Commonwealth where he served as chair of the Judiciary General
10Committee; and

11WHEREAS, He served as Lieutenant Governor during the term of
12Governor Henry M. Hoyt from 1879 to 1883; and

13WHEREAS, In 1887, he was appointed as Secretary of the
14Commonwealth and served in this post until his resignation to
15accept a nomination for Congress; and

16WHEREAS, Mr. Stone was elected to Congress and served until
171899; and

18WHEREAS, After his retirement from Congress, Mr. Stone
19returned to the practice of law and served in management
20positions in various businesses; and

21WHEREAS, Mr. Stone served as director or officer in
22corporations such as Warren Savings Bank, Cumberland Railroad
23Company, South Florida Land Company and Union Lumber Company;
24and

25WHEREAS, Mr. Stone also remained active in his community and
26served on the board of Warren County Public Library and as the
27first president of the Warren County Historical Society; and

28WHEREAS, Mr. Stone passed away on August 15, 1912, after
29battling a long illness; and

30WHEREAS, It is fitting to honor a man who dedicated his life

1to serving his community, his Commonwealth and his country;
2therefore be it

3RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of
4the Honorable Charles Warren Stone on the 170th anniversary of
5his birth.
