A RESOLUTION

 

1Encouraging the United States Navy to commission the USS
2Somerset in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where space is
3readily available for the commissioning and accompanying
4ceremony.

5WHEREAS, The USS Somerset is the newest amphibious transport
6dock ship, capable of carrying hundreds of members of the
7military anywhere they need to go; and

8WHEREAS, The USS Somerset is named in honor of the passengers
9of United Airlines Flight 93 whose actions prevented terrorist
10hijackers from reaching their intended target, forcing the
11aircraft to crash in Somerset County, Pennsylvania; and

12WHEREAS, The USS Somerset was christened in July 2012 and
13will be put in active service in remembrance of the heroes of
14September 11, 2001; and

15WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy has successfully cleared Philadelphia,
16Pennsylvania, as a potential site for the commissioning ceremony
17of the USS Somerset; and

1WHEREAS, Philadelphia is one of the closest ports to Somerset
2County and it would be appropriate and fitting that the vessel's
3commissioning ceremony be held at the Philadelphia port;
4therefore, be it

5RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
6Commonwealth of Pennsylvania encourage the United States Navy to
7strongly consider Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to be the site of
8the commissioning ceremony for the USS Somerset; and be it
9further

10RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
11the President of the United States; the United States Secretary
12of the Navy; and to each member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
