A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for his
2strength, courage and determination through a time of
3national crisis and war in remembrance of the occasion of his
4death.
5WHEREAS, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30,
61882, in Hyde Park, New York; and
7WHEREAS, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected thirty-second
8President of the United States in November 1932 and went on to
9become our longest-serving President; and
10WHEREAS, President Roosevelt came to the presidency, of a
11country crippled by the Great Depression, relying on a campaign
12where he mobilized the expanded ranks of the poor, as well as
13organized labor, ethnic minorities and urbanites; and
14WHEREAS, When President Roosevelt was inaugurated in March
151933, one-quarter of the work force was unemployed; and
16WHEREAS, President Roosevelt spearheaded a program of relief,
1recovery and reform, termed "The New Deal," which included the
2Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress
3Administration, each of which hired hundreds of thousands of
4unemployed Americans; and
5WHEREAS, On August 14, 1935, President Roosevelt signed the
6Social Security Act into law, providing funds for millions of
7Americans who were disabled, retired or unemployed; and
8WHEREAS, Many of the programs instituted by President
9Roosevelt still exist today to protect the citizens of our great
10nation; and
11WHEREAS, President Roosevelt led our great nation through a
12time of struggle and crisis during World War II; and
13WHEREAS, President Roosevelt typified the ideals of grace and
14honor as the United States stood on the precipice of a global
15war; and
16WHEREAS, President Roosevelt devoted much of his time and
17thought to the fundamental values of peace and to the resolution
18of conflict through nonaggressive means, as demonstrated by his
19commitment to the founding of the United Nations; and
20WHEREAS, As our nation once again stands at the crest of war
21and crisis, we hope our leaders will emulate President
22Roosevelt's strength, honor and grace; and
23WHEREAS, President Roosevelt served his country bravely until
24his death on April 12, 1945, at 63 years of age; therefore be it
25RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize
26President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for his leadership through
27chaos and struggle in remembrance of the occasion of his death.
