A RESOLUTION

 

1Honoring the life and extending condolences to the family of
2Cardinals baseball star Stan Musial.

3WHEREAS, Stan Musial, a Donora, Pennsylvania native who was
4nicknamed "Stan the Man" and considered by many as one of the
5greatest hitters in baseball history, passed away on January 19,
62013, at the age of 92; and

7WHEREAS, Stan Musial, the son of Polish immigrants, was born
8on November 21, 1920. Mr. Musial started his baseball career by
9playing for the Donora High School baseball team; and

10WHEREAS, Stan Musial signed a professional contract with the
11St. Louis Cardinals in 1938 as a pitcher but, by the time of his
12major league debut in 1941, he was converted into an outfielder;
13and

14WHEREAS, Stan Musial, noted for his unique baseball stance

1and consistent hits, helped the Cardinals win the World Series
2in 1942 during his first full season. Mr. Musial also helped the
3Cardinals win the World Series again in 1944 and 1946; and

4WHEREAS, Stan Musial continued his memorable baseball career
5with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941-1963. Mr. Musial missed
6only the 1945 season due to his service with the United States
7Navy; and

8WHEREAS, Stan Musial led the National League in 1943 in six
9offensive categories and earned the Most Valuable Player Award.
10In addition, he was selected to the All-Star team that same year
11and every year until his retirement for a total of 24 All-Star
12appearances; and

13WHEREAS, Stan Musial again won the Most Valuable Player Award
14in 1946 and 1948; and

15WHEREAS, Stan Musial retired in 1963 with career statistics
16of a 0.331 batting average, 3,630 hits and 475 home runs; and

17WHEREAS, Stan Musial was most noted for his humility and
18sportsmanship, including asking his team for a pay cut when he
19felt his physical condition and performance were not up to par;
20and

21WHEREAS, Stan Musial served as the Cardinals' general manager
22in 1967 and secured the pennant and World Series before leaving
23the position; and

24WHEREAS, Stan Musial also supervised various businesses and
25managed restaurants after his retirement from baseball; and

26WHEREAS, Stan Musial was also a loving husband and father to
27his wife, Lillian, and their four children, Richard, Gerry,
28Janet and Jeanie. Mr. Musial and his wife enjoyed almost 72
29years of marriage before Lillian's death in 2012; and

30WHEREAS, Stan Musial was awarded the Presidential Medal of

1Freedom, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a civilian in
2the United States, by President Obama on February 15, 2011; and

3WHEREAS, Stan Musial exhibited a remarkable and historic
4baseball career; therefore be it

5RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life
6and extend condolences to the surviving family of Stan Musial.
