A RESOLUTION
1Recognizing April 15, 2013, as a day honoring the lifetime
2achievements and lasting influence of Jackie Robinson in
3Pennsylvania.
4WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson was the first athlete in the history
5of the University of California at Los Angeles to letter in four
6sports in one year; and
7WHEREAS, On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first
8African American to play for a major league baseball team; and
9WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson, who began his career in the Negro
10Leagues, was named Rookie of the Year in 1947 and led the
11Brooklyn Dodgers to six National League pennants in ten years
12and a World Series Championship; and
13WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson's inspiring career earned him
1recognition as the first African American to win a batting
2title, lead the league in stolen bases, play in an All-Star
3game, play in the World Series and win a Most Valuable Player
4award; and
5WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson was elected to the Baseball Hall of
6Fame in 1962 and was the first African American to receive this
7honor; and
8WHEREAS, In March 1984, President Ronald Reagan posthumously
9awarded Jackie Robinson the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
10WHEREAS, On October 29, 2003, the United States Congress
11posthumously awarded Jackie Robinson the Congressional Gold
12Medal, the highest award that it can bestow; and
13WHEREAS, Major League Baseball renamed the Rookie of the Year
14Award the Jackie Robinson Award in his honor; and
15WHEREAS, Mr. Robinson's legacy continues through the Jackie
16Robinson Foundation which provides scholarships to students in
17need; and
18WHEREAS, Mr. Robinson's legacy helps to make the American
19dream more accessible to all; and
20WHEREAS, To honor Jackie Robinson's historic achievements, in
211997 Major League Baseball retired his number, 42, throughout
22baseball; therefore be it
23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April
2415, 2013, as a day honoring the lifetime achievements and
25lasting influence of Jackie Robinson in Pennsylvania.
