AN ACT

 

1Designating a bridge to be constructed on that portion of State
2Route 903 over the Lehigh River, Jim Thorpe Borough, Carbon
3County, as the Sgt. Andrew J. "AJ" Baddick Memorial Bridge.

4The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
5hereby enacts as follows:

6Section 1. Sgt. Andrew J. "AJ" Baddick Memorial Bridge.

7(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
8follows:

9(1) Sgt. Andrew J. "AJ" Baddick was a native of Jim
10Thorpe, Carbon County, and a 1997 graduate of Jim Thorpe Area
11Senior High School.

12(2) Sgt. Baddick enlisted in the United States Army in
131999 and graduated from Jump School at Fort Benning, Georgia,
14on February 14, 2001.

15(3) Later that same year, Sgt. Baddick reenlisted in the

1United States Army for six years.

2(4) In 2002, Sgt. Baddick was awarded the Army
3Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service while assigned as
4a Dismounted Infantryman in recognition of loyalty and
5commitment to excellence.

6(5) Later that same year, Sgt. Baddick was deployed to
7Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

8(6) Sgt. Baddick received the Soldier's Medal which is
9awarded to any member of the United States Armed Forces who,
10while serving in any capacity with the United States Army,
11distinguishes himself by heroism not involving actual
12conflict with an enemy.

13(7) Sgt. Baddick was honorably serving his country while
14on active duty in Iraq on September 29, 2003, when he gave
15his life attempting to rescue a fellow soldier from a
16submerged military vehicle.

17(8) Sgt. Baddick, beloved son of Ann Callen Baddick and
18Joseph Baddick, was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star.

19(b) Designation.--The bridge to be constructed on State
20Route 903 over the Lehigh River in Jim Thorpe Borough, Carbon
21County, is hereby designated the Sgt. Andrew J. "AJ" Baddick
22Memorial Bridge.

23(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
24maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
25traffic in both directions on the bridge.

26Section 2. Effective date.

27This act shall take effect immediately.
