AN ACT

 

1Designating a bridge on that portion of State Route 6 at Segment
20730 Offset 1125 over the Marvin Creek, Smethport Borough,
3McKean County, as the Bucktail Regiment Memorial Bridge.

4The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
5hereby enacts as follows:

6Section 1. Bucktail Regiment Memorial Bridge.

7(a) Findings.--

8(1) The Bucktail Regiment was a group of young recruits
9from McKean, Elk, Tioga and Cameron Counties that rose to the
10defense of the Union following the bombing of Fort Sumpter in
11April 1861.

12(2) Primarily composed of young woodsmen, lumberjacks,
13raftsmen, hunters and farmers accustomed to living in the
14rugged mountainous area of northern Pennsylvania, the men
15adopted the tail of the whitetail buck as their regiment's
16badge of honor.

1(3) The approximately 700 troops adorned their caps with
2deer tails and as a result, became known as the "Bucktails."

3(4) As part of the Federal Army, the troops became the
442nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, also known as the
5Bucktail Regiment, and served with high distinction in most
6of the major battles of the Army of the Potomac during the
7Civil War.

8(b) Designation.--The bridge located on State Route 6 at
9Segment 0730 Offset 1125 in Smethport Borough, McKean County,
10over the Marvin Creek is hereby designated the Bucktail Regiment
11Memorial Bridge.

12(c) Signs.–-The Department of Transportation shall erect and
13maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
14traffic in both directions on the bridge.

15Section 2. Effective date.

16This act shall take effect in 60 days.
