AN ACT

 

1Designating a bridge carrying State Route 1008 known as Pompey
2Hill Road, over the Stonycreek River in Quemahoning and
3Stonycreek Townships, Somerset County, as the Private John W.
4Mostoller Bridge.

5The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6hereby enacts as follows:

7Section 1. Private John W. Mostoller Memorial Bridge.

8(a) Declaration of policy.--The General Assembly finds and
9declares as follows:

10(1) Private John W. Mostoller was a native of the
11village of Mostoller, Somerset County, and following
12graduation from high school, enlisted in the Union Army.

13(2) Private Mostoller served in the Union Army from 1861
14to 1864, by reason of muster out of company while holding the
15grade of private, in Company B, Fifty-fourth Regiment of
16Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers.

17(3) Private Mostoller received a medal of honor on

1November 27, 1894, for most distinguished gallantry at the
2battle of Lynchburg, Virginia.

3(4) When the officers of his company were absent or
4disabled, Private Mostoller voluntarily led a charge upon a
5Confederate battery.

6(5) His name was entered and recorded on the Army and
7Navy Medal of Honor Roll on June 10, 1916.

8(6) Private Mostoller was a guest of the War Department
9at the entombment of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington
10National Cemetery, when he participated along with a number
11of other veterans of the Civil War from other states.

12(7) The Congressional Medal of Honor awarded to Private
13Mostoller during the Civil War was presented to Somerset
14County and is displayed inside the Union Street entrance to
15the Somerset County Courthouse. It is the only Congressional
16Medal of Honor won by a Somerset County soldier in the Civil
17War.

18(8) Private Mostoller, beloved son of Joseph and Sarah
19(Mowry) Mostoller courageously served his country and has
20been extolled by many for his bravery and service.

21(b) Designation.--State Route 1008, known as Pompey Hill
22Road over the Stonycreek River in Quemahoning and Stonycreek
23Townships, Somerset County, is hereby designated as the Private
24John W. Mostoller Memorial Bridge.

25(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
26maintain appropriate signs to indicate the designation under
27subsection (b).

28Section 2. Effective date.

29This act shall take effect in 60 days.
