AN ACT

 

1Designating State Bridge No. 53-0054-0290-0143 carrying S.R. 54
2in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County, over the Reading and
3Northern Railroad, as the Cornelius McElhenny Memorial
4Bridge.

5The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6hereby enacts as follows:

7Section 1.  Cornelius McElhenny Memorial Bridge.

8(a)  Findings and declarations.--The General Assembly finds
9and declares as follows:

10(1)  For many years, the bridge carrying S.R. 54 over the
11Reading and Northern Railroad in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill
12County, Department of Transportation No. 53-0054-0290-0143,
13has been known as the Cornelius McElhenny Bridge.

14(2)  It was named for Cornelius McElhenny, a resident of
15Mahanoy Township and a lifelong public servant.

16(3)  Cornelius McElhenny was born June 13, 1900, and died
17February 11, 1971.

18(4)  He worked in the Morea colliery and served as

1president of the local chapter of the United Mine Workers of
2America from 1930 until 1943.

3(5)  Throughout his life, he also held positions as
4supervisor for Mahanoy Township, president of the Mahanoy
5Township Water Authority, member of the Schuylkill County
6Executive Board, member of the Mahanoy Township School Board,
7member of the Mahanoy Area School Board and director of the
8Morea-New Boston Breaker Corporation. He was also active in
9St. Canicus Roman Catholic Church of Mahanoy City.

10(6)  Cornelius McElhenny dedicated his life to his
11community, and it is fitting that the bridge be officially
12and permanently designated in his honor.

13(b)  Designation.--The bridge, known as State Bridge No. 53-
140054-0290-0143, carrying S.R. 54 in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill
15County, over the Reading and Northern Railroad, is hereby
16designated as the Cornelius McElhenny Memorial Bridge.

17(c)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
18maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
19traffic in both directions on the bridge.

20Section 2.  Effective date.

21This act shall take effect in 60 days.
