| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating July 31, 2012, as "Abie Abraham Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania, in tribute to the late retired United States |
3 | Army Sergeant and Butler County resident who died March 22, |
4 | 2012, at 98 years of age. |
5 | WHEREAS, Born July 31, 1913, Abie Abraham attained |
6 | distinction as a heroic defender of the Philippines during World |
7 | War II, Japanese prisoner of war, lecturer, author and volunteer |
8 | on behalf of hospitalized veterans at the Butler Veterans |
9 | Affairs Medical Center; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Abraham served with the 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th, |
11 | 30th and 31st Infantry Regiments, having enlisted in the United |
12 | States Army in the 1930s; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Stationed in the Philippines in 1941, Sgt. Abraham |
14 | fought the Japanese Imperial Army with valor and honor while |
15 | undersupplied and underfed; and |
16 | WHEREAS, During the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, |

1 | Sgt. Abraham endured injury and untold privation and barbarities |
2 | in the course of the Bataan Death March and while interned at |
3 | Cabanatuan prison camp; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Liberated in 1945, Sgt. Abraham worked in the |
5 | postwar period to identify and disinter the unmarked grave sites |
6 | of thousands of fallen Allied soldiers along the Bataan Death |
7 | March route; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Abraham chronicled his wartime experiences and |
9 | attested to the sacrifice of his fellow soldiers in his books: |
10 | "Ghost of Bataan Speaks" and "Oh, God, Where Are You?"; and |
11 | WHEREAS, For his notable military service, Sgt. Abraham |
12 | received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star medals |
13 | and numerous other honors; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps recognized Sgt. |
15 | Abraham as an honorary member; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The Philippine Army recognized Sgt. Abraham as an |
17 | honorary colonel; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Abraham generously supported the Defenders of |
19 | Bataan and Corregidor Museum at Brooke County Public Library in |
20 | Wellsburg, West Virginia; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Abraham received the 2003 Ellis Island Family |
22 | Heritage Award and was honored as the 1994 Outstanding Disabled |
23 | Veteran of the Year in Pennsylvania and the 1995 Butler County |
24 | Veteran of the Year; and |
25 | WHEREAS, At the Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center Sgt. |
26 | Abraham logged a record 36,851 hours in more than two decades of |
27 | distinguished volunteer service; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Sgt. Abraham was buried April 25, 2012, in Arlington |
29 | National Cemetery in Virginia; and |
30 | WHEREAS, The Senate commends the 30-year military career of |

1 | Sgt. Abraham, including his significant contributions while |
2 | serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and applauds |
3 | his outstanding citizenship and commitment to enriching the |
4 | lives of his fellow veterans; therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate July 31, 2012, as "Abie |
6 | Abraham Day" in Pennsylvania, in tribute to the late retired |
7 | United States Army Sergeant and Butler County resident who died |
8 | March 22, 2012, at 98 years of age. |
