| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Hines Ward for his distinguished career in the National |
2 | Football League as a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh |
3 | Steelers and his outstanding contributions to society as a |
4 | representative of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the City of |
5 | Pittsburgh and this Commonwealth. |
6 | WHEREAS, Hines Ward was born March 8, 1976, in Seoul, South |
7 | Korea; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward played college football at the University |
9 | of Georgia and, during his time there, he played wide receiver, |
10 | tailback and quarterback; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward was selected as a third-round draft choice |
12 | in the 1998 National Football League draft by the Pittsburgh |
13 | Steelers; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward played his entire professional football |
15 | career, which spanned 14 years, with the Pittsburgh Steelers; |
16 | and |

1 | WHEREAS, During his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mr. |
2 | Ward led the team in at least one statistic each year; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward has earned three team Most Valuable Player |
4 | selections, appeared in four Pro Bowls and broken many |
5 | Pittsburgh Steelers' team records, including most all-time |
6 | receptions, most receptions in a single season and most |
7 | consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward is the only member of the Pittsburgh |
9 | Steelers and is only the eighth receiver in National Football |
10 | League history to have 1,000 catches in his career; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward is also only the second player to reach |
12 | 1,000 career receptions and win multiple Super Bowls; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward led the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Super |
14 | Bowl three times in his career and is a two-time Super Bowl |
15 | Champion; and |
16 | WHEREAS, In Super Bowl XL, Mr. Ward was named Most Valuable |
17 | Player due to his outstanding performance in the Pittsburgh |
18 | Steelers' 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in 2006; and |
19 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward retired from the National Football League |
20 | after an amazing professional career on March 20, 2012; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward has also been a leader off the field, |
22 | dedicating his time to helping to improve the lives of |
23 | underprivileged youth in the Pittsburgh and Atlanta, Georgia, |
24 | areas through his Helping Hands U.S. Foundation; and |
25 | WHEREAS, Helping Hands U.S. Foundation focuses on improving |
26 | literacy among children and provides programs and services to |
27 | better equip children for achieving success in life; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward also continues to work in his home country |
29 | of South Korea through his Hines Ward Helping Hands Korea |
30 | Foundation which is aimed at ending biracial discrimination; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward has been appointed as the Goodwill |
2 | Ambassador to South Korea by the Korean Ministry of Foreign |
3 | Affairs and Trade; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward has also assisted with many other |
5 | charitable organizations, including the Highmark Caring |
6 | Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Salvation Army, Make-A- |
7 | Wish Foundation and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Mr. Ward has been recognized for his many |
9 | contributions which have impacted the lives of children when he |
10 | was named the 2008 Walter Payton Man of the Year; therefore be |
11 | it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor Hines Ward for his |
13 | distinguished career in the National Football League as a wide |
14 | receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers and his outstanding |
15 | contributions to society as a representative of the Pittsburgh |
16 | Steelers, the City of Pittsburgh and this Commonwealth. |
