A RESOLUTION

Proclaiming October 24, 2011, as "Canada Day" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania exported $10,287,395,394 in merchandise

3

goods to Canada in 2010. This represents 29% of Pennsylvania's

4

worldwide sales in 2010; and

5

WHEREAS, Three hundred thirty thousand and six hundred

6

Pennsylvania jobs are supported by Canada-Pennsylvania trade;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania and Canada share several important

9

international trade corridors, including the Capitol Corridor

10

from Ottawa to Washington and the Continental One Corridor from

11

Toronto to Miami, benefiting both commerce and consumers; and

12

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania-Canada partnership boasts a healthy

13

bilateral tourism industry with more than 1.2 million combined

14

visits accounting for more than $340 million in expenditures in

15

2009; and

16

WHEREAS, In 2010, Pennsylvania exported $1.4 billion in

agriculture and food products; and

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania and Canada are partners in the

3

stewardship of the Great Lakes, the largest body of fresh water

4

in the world. The Great Lakes sustain life, provide recreation,

5

support local and regional economies and are a true natural

6

legacy of the people of both Pennsylvania and Canada; and

7

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania exported $16,010,787 in oil and gas to

8

Canada in 2010; and

9

WHEREAS, Academic institutions in both Canada and

10

Pennsylvania are actively engaged in a number of partnerships in

11

areas, including engineering, medicine, law and the arts; and

12

WHEREAS, Both Canada and Pennsylvania are actively engaged in

13

a number of partnerships in various fields of innovative

14

technology which are laying the foundation for our economic

15

future and mutual benefit; and

16

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Flagship Niagara stands daily

17

witness to the Battle of Lake Erie, one of the historic battles

18

which made the Great Lakes region the greatest theater of

19

conflict during the War of 1812, a war which forged the destiny

20

of our continent and whose greatest legacy is 200 years of

21

peace; and

22

WHEREAS, Canada and Pennsylvania share many deep economic,

23

historical, cultural and familial ties; therefore be it

24

RESOLVED, That the Senate, in recognition of the strong and

25

lasting ties between Canada and the great Commonwealth of

26

Pennsylvania, proclaim October 24, 2011, as "Canada Day" in

27

Pennsylvania.
