| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the month of May 2011 as "Arthritis Awareness Month" |
2 | in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Arthritis is one of the most common chronic health |
4 | problems in the United States and the leading cause of limited |
5 | joint movement; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Roughly 46 million Americans, including an estimated |
7 | one in five adults, have arthritis; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Arthritis causes severe pain, swelling and limited |
9 | movement in joints and connective tissue throughout the body; |
10 | and |
11 | WHEREAS, Osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid |
12 | arthritis are the most prevalent forms of this painful |
13 | inflammatory disease; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The specific cause of arthritis is unknown for most |
15 | forms of the disease; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The prevalence of arthritis is higher among women; |
17 | and |

1 | WHEREAS, The annual economic impact of arthritis in the |
2 | United States includes more than $86.2 million in medical care |
3 | and lost wages; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment is recommended to |
5 | minimize the toll of arthritis; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Treatment may include a combination of medication, |
7 | exercise, rest, use of heat and cold, joint protection and |
8 | surgery in some cases; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Public awareness of arthritis symptoms and treatment |
10 | options is important in the fight against the disease; therefore |
11 | be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of May 2011 as |
13 | "Arthritis Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. |
