A RESOLUTION

Designating April 12, 2011, as "Temple University Day" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Temple University is recognized as a leading public

4

research and academic institution in the City of Philadelphia

5

and throughout this Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, Temple University's 17 schools and colleges provide

7

highly valued employment, educational and research opportunities

8

at Center City, Ambler, University Hospital & Health Sciences

9

Center, Fort Washington and Harrisburg locations; and

10

WHEREAS, Offering 320 academic degree programs, including 7

11

first-professional degrees, and other professional, continuing

12

education and international programs, Temple University

13

currently enrolls 39,000 students; and

14

WHEREAS, One in every eight college graduates from the

15

greater Philadelphia region has earned a Temple University

16

degree; and

17

WHEREAS, Temple University annually generates $2.7 billion

for the Delaware Valley; and

2

WHEREAS, Temple University was founded in 1884 as a

3

nonsectarian institution for working-class students; and

4

WHEREAS, Then named the Temple College, the institution

5

originated from Russell Conwell's popular weekly tutoring

6

sessions at Grace Baptist Church in Philadelphia; and

7

WHEREAS, Founding President Conwell believed greatness

8

"consists not in the holding of some future office, but really

9

consists in doing great deeds with little means and the

10

accomplishment of vast purposes from the private ranks of life,"

11

and he used his personal income to supply funding for

12

approximately 10,000 students of the nearly 100,000 students who

13

attended Temple during his 38-year presidency; and

14

WHEREAS, Incorporated in 1907 as a university, Temple has

15

operated since 1965 as a State-related university in our

16

Commonwealth's higher education system; and

17

WHEREAS, Approximately 12,000 students live on or around

18

Temple University's 105-acre main campus in the City of

19

Philadelphia; and

20

WHEREAS, Temple University's 186-acre campus in suburban

21

Ambler confers degrees in community and regional planning,

22

horticulture and landscape architecture and offers other

23

certificate programs; and

24

WHEREAS, Fort Washington and Harrisburg campuses offer

25

various undergraduate, graduate and noncredit programs; and

26

WHEREAS, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Temple

27

University School of Medicine 56th in the nation among research

28

institutions; and

29

WHEREAS, Temple University School of Medicine is staffed by

30

453 full-time faculty, 67 part-time faculty, 1,164 volunteer

faculty and 869 staff members; and

WHEREAS, Temple University School of Medicine enjoys a close

3

educational and working relationship with the Temple University

4

Health System, comprising Temple University Hospital and its

5

Episcopal Campus, Jeanes Hospital and other major teaching

6

affiliates and community-based practices; and

7

WHEREAS, Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine is

8

the only school of its kind nationwide to be attached to a major

9

university with a comprehensive allopathic academic health

10

sciences center; and

11

WHEREAS, Temple University Beasley School of Law's combined

12

2010 Pennsylvania Bar Exam pass rate of 92.05% exceeded the

13

Statewide average by 9%; and

14

WHEREAS, Temple University sponsors 24 varsity athletic

15

programs, serving more than 600 student athletes; and

16

WHEREAS, The name given to university teams, the Owls, refers

17

to the evening classes developed for working students of limited

18

means and invokes founder Russell Conwell's remark: "The owl of

19

the night makes the eagle of the day"; therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate April 12, 2011, as

21

"Temple University Day" in Pennsylvania.
