A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Pittsburgh Steelers for winning the 2010 AFC

2

Championship and competing in Super Bowl XLV against the

3

Green Bay Packers in Dallas, Texas, on February 6, 2011,

4

making their eighth trip to the Super Bowl.

5

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Steelers, then named the Pittsburgh

6

Pirates, were founded on July 8, 1933, in Pittsburgh,

7

Pennsylvania, by the late Arthur Joseph Rooney, one of the

8

pioneers of the American professional sports world, who is

9

enshrined in the Professional Football Hall of Fame and

10

remembered as one of the City of Pittsburgh's greatest citizens;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, The franchise, named to reflect the City of

13

Pittsburgh's prominence as a steelmaking center, is now the

14

fifth-oldest franchise in the National Football League (NFL);

15

and

16

WHEREAS, Over the last eight decades, the Steelers have

17

become a beloved part of the City of Pittsburgh and have brought

many great moments to the league and city; and

2

WHEREAS, Through draft selections in the 1970s, the Steelers

3

assembled a group of remarkably talented players, including many

4

future Hall of Fame inductees, to form one of the greatest NFL

5

teams in history, making the playoffs eight seasons in a row and

6

winning four Super Bowls; and

7

WHEREAS, The team is a true dynasty. Throughout its history,

8

the franchise has captured 20 division championships, made 26

9

playoff appearances, won eight conference championships and won

10

six league championships, becoming the first team in NFL history

11

to do so; and

12

WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team to win

13

back-to-back Super Bowls twice; and

14

WHEREAS, During the 2010 season, the Steelers secured a first

15

seed in the conference and advanced to the American Football

16

Conference game, where they defeated the New York Jets 24-19 on

17

January 23, 2011; and

18

WHEREAS, The Steelers represented Pennsylvania in Super Bowl

19

XLV on February 6, 2011, at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas;

20

and

21

WHEREAS, Although recording 387 yards versus the Green Bay

22

Packers' 338 yards and having possession of the ball for 33.25

23

minutes of the game, the final score was Pittsburgh Steelers 25,

24

Green Bay Packers 31; and

25

WHEREAS, Team owner Dan Rooney and team president Art Rooney

26

II, the son and grandson, respectively, of Pittsburgh Steelers

27

founder Art Rooney, have remarkable loyalty to Steelers fans and

28

the City of Pittsburgh and have assembled an exceptional team of

29

players, coaches and staff that make achieving such success

30

possible; and

WHEREAS, For 78 years, the people of the City of Pittsburgh

2

have seen themselves in the grit, tenacity and success of the

3

Pittsburgh Steelers franchise, and they proudly join the team in

4

celebrating their eighth trip to the Super Bowl championship

5

game; and

6

WHEREAS, The Steelers have earned the admiration of the

7

residents of this Commonwealth for an outstanding season;

8

therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate the Pittsburgh

10

Steelers for winning the 2010 AFC Championship and making its

11

eighth trip to the league championship, competing in Super Bowl

12

XLV.
