AN ACT

Designating a bridge on that portion of Interstate 99 in Freedom

2

Township, Blair County, as the Cpl. Harry Raymond Harr

3

Memorial Bridge.

The General Assembly finds and declares as follows:

5

(1)  Cpl. Harry Raymond Harr, United States Army, from

6

East Freedom, PA, was killed in action at 24 years of age on

7

June 5, 1945, Mindanao, Pacific, during World War II.

8

(2)  Cpl. Harr smothered a Japanese hand grenade with his

9

body and saved the lives of four of his fellow soldiers, thus

10

enabling the four remaining soldiers to repair their machine

11

guns and hold their position at the Battle of Mindanao

12

Island.

(3)  Cpl. Harr received the Congressional Medal of Honor

14

for his bravery.

15

(4)  There are many accidents on the bridge, located on

16

I-99 at mile marker 19 in the southern end of Freedom

17

Township and passing over old State Route 220 near the

18

Greenfield Township line, and the lack of a designation has

19

caused confusion for emergency responders.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

2

hereby enacts as follows:

Section 1.  Cpl. Harry Raymond Harr Memorial Bridge.

(a)  Designation.--The bridge located on I-99 at mile marker

5

19 in the southern end of Freedom Township and passing over old

6

State Route 220 near the Greenfield Township line, Blair County,

7

is hereby designated the Cpl. Harry Raymond Harr Memorial

8

Bridge.

(b)  Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and

10

maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to

11

traffic in both directions on the bridge.

Section 2.  Effective date.

13

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
