AN ACT

Designating and adopting the Piper J-3 Cub as the official

2

airplane of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, The Piper J-3 Cub was built in Lock Haven,

4

Pennsylvania, between 1937 and 1947 and played a major role in

5

the growth of the small aviation aircraft industry; and

6

WHEREAS, The Piper J-3 Cub was originally intended for flight

7

training but became one of the most popular and best-known light

8

aircraft of all time, prompting comparisons to the Ford Model T

9

automobile; and

10

WHEREAS, During World War II, the Piper J-3 Cub was the

11

primary trainer aircraft for the Civilian Pilot Training Program

12

and by the war's end, 80% of all United States military pilots

13

received their initial flight training in the Piper J-3 Cub; and 

14

WHEREAS, After World War II, the Piper J-3 cub, built

15

exclusively in Lock Haven, found new popularity with private

16

pilots.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

18

hereby enacts as follows:

Section 1.  Official State airplane.

The Piper J-3 Cub is hereby designated and adopted as the

3

official airplane of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Section 2.  Effective date.

5

This act shall take effect immediately.
