| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating March 30 of each year as "Welcome Home Vietnam |
2 | Veterans Day." |
3 | WHEREAS, The Vietnam Conflict was fought from 1961 to 1975; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, The United States became involved in the Vietnam |
6 | Conflict because policymakers in the United States believed that |
7 | if South Vietnam fell to a Communist government, Communism would |
8 | spread throughout the rest of Southeast Asia; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1965, there were approximately 80,000 United |
10 | States troops in Vietnam, and by 1969, a peak of about 543,000 |
11 | troops was reached; and |
12 | WHEREAS, More than 58,000 members of the United States Armed |
13 | Forces lost their lives in the Vietnam Conflict, and more than |
14 | 300,000 were wounded; and |
15 | WHEREAS, According to the Commonwealth's military records, |
16 | more than 3,400 Pennsylvanians were killed in the Vietnam |

1 | Conflict and many more were listed as "missing in action"; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The uniquely divisive nature of the Vietnam Conflict |
3 | in the context of American history and the crossfire of debate |
4 | about the country's involvement in the conflict deprived many |
5 | members of the United States Armed Forces of public support and |
6 | appreciation for their patriotic service; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The bravery and service of our country's Vietnam |
8 | Conflict veterans should be recognized and honored. |
9 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
10 | hereby enacts as follows: |
11 | Section 1. Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. |
12 | March 30 of each year is designated as "Welcome Home Vietnam |
13 | Veterans Day." The Governor shall issue annually a proclamation |
14 | calling upon all public schools and educational institutions to |
15 | observe "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day" and to conduct |
16 | exercises recognizing the contributions of all those involved in |
17 | the Vietnam Conflict and remembering the sacrifices they made |
18 | for their country. |
19 | Section 2. Effective date. |
20 | This act shall take effect immediately. |
