AN ACT

Designating the section of State Route 23 that is situated

2

between Chester County's border with Montgomery County and

3

State Route 100 as the Medal of Honor Grove Highway.

The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

5

hereby enacts as follows:

Section 1.  Findings.

7

The General Assembly finds and declares as follows:

(1)  That the 52-acre Freedom Foundation's Medal of Honor

9

Grove in Schuylkill Township, Chester County, is the nation's

10

oldest memorial site dedicated to Medal of Honor recipients.

11

The site was dedicated on October 1, 1964, through the work

12

of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and General Omar Bradley,

13

among others. It honors our nation's Medal of Honor

14

recipients.

(2)  The Medal of Honor is our nation's highest military

16

honor. Since its inception in 1862, it has been bestowed upon

17

346 Pennsylvanians and 3,448 individuals who distinguished

18

themselves through "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at

19

the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while

engaged in the action against an enemy of the United States."

(3)  The Medal of Honor Grove is adjacent to and accessed

3

by State Route 23. It is essential that we recognize the

4

Medal of Honor Grove and the individuals it represents so

5

that their heroism and service are never forgotten.

Section 2.  Medal of Honor Grove Highway.

The section of State Route 23 located between that is

situated between Chester County's border with Montgomery County

9

and State Route 100 is hereby designated as the Medal of Honor

10

Grove Highway.

Section 3.  Signs.

12

The Department of Transportation shall erect and maintain

13

appropriate signs to indicate this designation.

14

Section 4.  Effective date.

15

This act shall take effect in 60 days.
