| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating July 11, 2012, as "Safe Haven Day" in Pennsylvania. |
2 | WHEREAS, On July 11, 2001, an infant was found in a garbage |
3 | dumping bin compactor at the Sunbury Municipal Waste Transfer |
4 | Station; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The infant, given the name "Baby Mary," was murdered |
6 | by her mother shortly after her birth; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The public outcry over the murder of "Baby Mary" led |
8 | the General Assembly to pass the Safe Haven Act of 2002; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The Safe Haven Act of 2002, also known as the |
10 | Newborn Protection Act, allows parents of a newborn to leave the |
11 | newborn in the care of a hospital without fear of criminal |
12 | liability provided that certain criteria are met; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The goal of the act is to find a safe and permanent |
14 | home for all newborns; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The act has been credited with saving the lives of |

1 | numerous children; and |
2 | WHEREAS, July 11, 2012, will mark the 11th anniversary of the |
3 | birth and death of "Baby Mary"; and |
4 | WHEREAS, It is fitting to remember "Baby Mary" and to |
5 | recognize the law she inspired, which has saved numerous |
6 | children in this Commonwealth; therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July |
8 | 11, 2012, as "Safe Haven Day" in Pennsylvania. |
