| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life of Dr. Joseph "Doc" Mattioli, founder and |
2 | chairman of the board of Pocono Raceway, who died January 26, |
3 | 2012. |
4 | WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Mattioli, known as "Doc" by his friends |
5 | and associates, was born in Old Forge on April 14, 1925; and |
6 | WHEREAS, During World War II, Dr. Mattioli served his country |
7 | with dedication and courage as a Navy medic in the Pacific; and |
8 | WHEREAS, After serving in World War II, Dr. Mattioli enrolled |
9 | in the dentistry program at Temple University; and |
10 | WHEREAS, After graduation, Dr. Mattioli opened his own dental |
11 | practice which, due to his skill and dedication, became very |
12 | successful; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioli also invested in and developed |
14 | properties in Philadelphia and northeastern Pennsylvania, where |

1 | he became involved in the start up of Pocono Raceway; and |
2 | WHEREAS, In the early 1960s, Dr. Mattioli founded Pocono |
3 | Raceway, and under his leadership, the track grew in prominence, |
4 | hosting 68 successful NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioli oversaw all aspects of Pocono Raceway |
6 | operations until last fall when he turned over operations of the |
7 | track to his grandchildren to carry on his legacy; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Today, Pocono Raceway is one of the last remaining |
9 | family-owned and family-run tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup |
10 | Series schedule; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Due to Dr. Mattioli's efforts, Pocono Raceway is |
12 | also the world's largest solar-powered sports facility and is a |
13 | leader in the renewable energy and environmental fields; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Well known for his dedication to his community, Dr. |
15 | Mattioli received the Philanthropic Lifetime Achievement Award |
16 | for his generous and continuous contributions to local civic |
17 | organizations, hospitals, schools and charities; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioli served on the board of directors of |
19 | numerous organizations and was dedicated to improving the |
20 | quality of life in northeastern Pennsylvania; and |
21 | WHEREAS, On January 26, 2012, after battling a lengthy |
22 | illness, Dr. Mattioli passed away surrounded by his loving |
23 | family; and |
24 | WHEREAS, Dr. Mattioli is survived by his wife of 63 years, |
25 | Rose; daughters, "Looie" and Michele; son, Joseph III; seven |
26 | grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and |
27 | WHEREAS, It is fitting to recognize an extraordinary man who |
28 | served his country and community, and Dr. Mattioli was one of |
29 | the most respected and admired men in automobile racing; |
30 | therefore be it |

3 | Pocono Raceway, who died January 26, 2012. |
