A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the bicentennial of Bradford County in 2012.

2

WHEREAS, The General Assembly created Bradford County in

3

1812; and

4

WHEREAS, The General Assembly named Bradford County after

5

William Bradford, the second Attorney General of the United

6

States under President George Washington; and

7

WHEREAS, Towanda was selected as the county seat, with the

8

first election held on October 13, 1812; and

9

WHEREAS, Bradford County history may go as far back as the

10

early 17th century, as Etienne Brule, an explorer with Samuel de

11

Champlain, traversed the entire length of the Susquehanna River

12

in 1615-1616; and

13

WHEREAS, In 1773, large waves of settlers began arriving in

the area, mostly from Connecticut, and then, later, from New

2

York; and

3

WHEREAS, During its storied history, Bradford County has been

4

part of the state of Connecticut and the counties of Luzerne and

5

Lackawanna in this Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, Today, Bradford County is home to more than 62,000

7

residents; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor and

9

recognize the bicentennial of Bradford County in 2012.
