A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of May 5 through 13, 2012, as "National

2

Travel and Tourism Week" and April 30, 2012, as "Tourism Day"

3

in Pennsylvania. 

4

WHEREAS, The week of May 5 through 13, 2012, has been

5

selected as "National Travel and Tourism Week," and April 30,

6

2012, has been selected as "Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania; and

7

WHEREAS, "National Tourism Week" was established in 1983 when

8

the Congress of the United States passed a joint resolution

9

designating a week in May 1984 as "National Tourism Week" and,

10

in a White House ceremony, the President of the United States

11

signed a Presidential proclamation urging citizens to observe

12

the week with the appropriate ceremonies and activities; and

13

WHEREAS, The travel and tourism industry of this Commonwealth

has selected April 30, 2012, as "Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania;

2

and

3

WHEREAS, Tourism is Pennsylvania's second-largest industry

4

and a major contributor to the economy of this Commonwealth,

5

accounting for an annual economic impact of $36 billion; and

6

WHEREAS, Tourism supports a work force of more than 450,000

7

people, with one out of every 12 Pennsylvania jobs relying on

8

travel-and-tourism-related industries; and

9

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is one of the most visited states in

10

the country, with an estimated 170 million domestic visits

11

annually; therefore be it

12

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May 5

13

through 13, 2012, as "National Travel and Tourism Week" and

14

April 30, 2012, as "Tourism Day" in Pennsylvania.
