A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the volunteers participating in Keep Pennsylvania

2

Beautiful's Great American Cleanup of PA from March 1 through

3

May 31, 2012.

4

WHEREAS, The Great American Cleanup of PA is celebrating its

5

eighth year of involving people throughout this Commonwealth in

6

the cleanup of litter and trash along our roadsides, streams,

7

beaches, parks, forests and neighborhoods to make our

8

communities clean and beautiful; and

9

WHEREAS, Last year, 159,922 volunteers from all 67 counties

10

of this Commonwealth participated in 4,222 events as part of the

11

Great American Cleanup of PA; and

12

WHEREAS, Volunteers collected 354,267 bags, or 7,085,340

13

pounds, of trash, cleaned 13,140 miles of roads, railroad

14

tracks, trails, waterways or shorelines and 5,887 acres of parks

15

or wetlands and planted 3,321 trees, bulbs and plants in an

16

effort to keep Pennsylvania beautiful; and

WHEREAS, Since 2004, more than 1.2 million volunteers have

2

participated in the cleanups, collecting more than 61 million

3

pounds of litter and waste, cleaning 106,000 miles of roads and

4

planting more than 76,000 trees, bulbs and flowers in this

5

Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, The Great American Cleanup of PA was organized with

7

the help of a broad partnership of State agencies, nonprofit

8

groups, businesses and other associations, including Keep

9

America Beautiful, the Department of Environmental Protection,

10

the Department of Transportation, the Pennsylvania Beverage

11

Association, the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association, the

12

Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association, Waste Management,

13

Keystone Sanitary Landfill, the Steel Recycling Institute, the

14

American Chemistry Council, the Pennsylvania Downtown Center and

15

the West Ward Neighborhood Partnership; and

16

WHEREAS, The Department of Environmental Protection and the

17

Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association, including Keystone

18

Sanitary Landfill and Waste Management, are arranging for the

19

free disposal of trash collected during the Let's Pick It Up PA-

20

Everyday initiative, April 16 through 30, for groups registered

21

in the Great American Cleanup of PA; and

22

WHEREAS, The Department of Transportation and Keep America

23

Beautiful are providing free cleanup supplies, such as bags,

24

gloves and vests, for Great American Cleanup of PA participants;

25

and

26

WHEREAS, Sponsors of Pick It Up PA Days, including the

27

Department of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Waste

28

Industries Association and participating landfills, are

29

providing free disposal for volunteers participating in

30

registered events during the Pick It Up PA Days, April 21

through May 7; and

2

WHEREAS, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful organizers have

3

scheduled cleanup events in which residents of all 67 counties

4

can participate and have posted those events at

5

WHEREAS, In 2011, Keep America Beautiful recognized the

7

Department of Transportation for exemplary contributions and

8

support of the Great American Cleanup of PA and the national

9

Great American Cleanup for the eighth consecutive year; and

10

WHEREAS, In 2011, Keep America Beautiful recognized Keep

11

Pennsylvania Beautiful for 100% county participation in the

12

Great American Cleanup of PA; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and

14

honor the thousands of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Keep

15

America Beautiful volunteers and all participating and

16

supporting agencies and organizations of the Great American

17

Cleanup of PA for their efforts to keep Pennsylvania beautiful;

18

and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge its members

20

and other elected officials, residents, businesses, nonprofit

21

organizations and groups and individuals throughout this

22

Commonwealth to commit to removing litter in our neighborhoods

23

and communities in support of the Great American Cleanup of PA.
