| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for his |
2 | strength, courage and determination through a time of |
3 | national crisis and war in remembrance of the occasion of his |
4 | death. |
5 | WHEREAS, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, |
6 | 1882, in Hyde Park, New York; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected thirty-second |
8 | President of the United States in November 1932 and went on to |
9 | become our longest-serving President; and |
10 | WHEREAS, President Roosevelt came to the presidency, of a |
11 | country crippled by the Great Depression, relying on a campaign |
12 | where he mobilized the expanded ranks of the poor, as well as |
13 | organized labor, ethnic minorities and urbanites; and |
14 | WHEREAS, When President Roosevelt was inaugurated in March |
15 | 1933, one-quarter of the work force was unemployed; and |
16 | WHEREAS, President Roosevelt spearheaded a program of relief, |

1 | recovery and reform, termed "The New Deal," which included the |
2 | Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress |
3 | Administration, each of which hired hundreds of thousands of |
4 | unemployed Americans; and |
5 | WHEREAS, On August 14, 1935, President Roosevelt signed the |
6 | Social Security Act into law, providing funds for millions of |
7 | Americans who were disabled, retired or unemployed; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Many of the programs instituted by President |
9 | Roosevelt still exist today to protect the citizens of our great |
10 | nation; and |
11 | WHEREAS, President Roosevelt led our great nation through a |
12 | time of struggle and crisis during World War II; and |
13 | WHEREAS, President Roosevelt typified the ideals of grace and |
14 | honor as the United States stood on the precipice of a global |
15 | war; and |
16 | WHEREAS, President Roosevelt devoted much of his time and |
17 | thought to the fundamental values of peace and to the resolution |
18 | of conflict through nonaggressive means, as demonstrated by his |
19 | commitment to the founding of the United Nations; and |
20 | WHEREAS, As our nation once again stands at the crest of war |
21 | and crisis, we hope our leaders will emulate President |
22 | Roosevelt's strength, honor and grace; and |
23 | WHEREAS, President Roosevelt served his country bravely until |
24 | his death on April 12, 1945, at 63 years of age; therefore be it |
25 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize |
26 | President Franklin Delano Roosevelt for his leadership through |
27 | chaos and struggle in remembrance of the occasion of his death. |
