| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing May 1, 2012, as "World Asthma Day" in Pennsylvania. |
2 | WHEREAS, "World Asthma Day" will take place on May 1, 2012; |
3 | and |
4 | WHEREAS, "World Asthma Day" is organized by the Global |
5 | Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in collaboration with the |
6 | Pennsylvania Asthma Partnership to raise awareness about asthma |
7 | and improve asthma care throughout the world; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Each year GINA chooses a theme and organizes |
9 | preparation and distribution of "World Asthma Day" materials and |
10 | resources; and |
11 | WHEREAS, This year the theme for the occasion is "You Can |
12 | Control Your Asthma"; and |
13 | WHEREAS, "World Asthma Day" activities are organized in each |
14 | country by health care professionals, educators and members of |
15 | the public who want to help reduce the burden of asthma; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The first "World Asthma Day" in 1998 was celebrated |
17 | in more than 35 countries in conjunction with the first world |

1 | asthma meeting held in Barcelona, Spain; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Participation has increased with each "World Asthma |
3 | Day" held since then, and the day has become one of the world's |
4 | most important asthma awareness and education events; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Many Americans are afflicted with asthma, a serious |
6 | chronic lung disease, caused by continual airway inflammation |
7 | punctuated by episodes or attacks of increased inflammation |
8 | often in response to specific triggers; and |
9 | WHEREAS, These attacks, characterized by difficulty in |
10 | breathing, occasionally are extreme and constitute a medical |
11 | emergency; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Over the past two decades, the burden of asthma in |
13 | the United States has greatly increased; and |
14 | WHEREAS, More recent data about asthma-related |
15 | hospitalizations and mortality appear to indicate that asthma |
16 | prevalence has stabilized and improved levels of disease |
17 | management have helped to mitigate asthma's effects; therefore |
18 | be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May 1, |
20 | 2012, as "World Asthma Day" in Pennsylvania. |
