INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MARCH 26, 2012  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of April 2012 as "Pennsylvania Community

2

College Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's community colleges serve more

4

than 468,000 students across 44 of the State's counties; and

5

WHEREAS, One out of every four undergraduates of this

6

Commonwealth attends a community college; and

7

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer and support dual enrollment

8

of more than 11,500 high school students, representing half of

9

this Commonwealth's school districts; and

10

WHEREAS, Community colleges facilitate career pathways with

11

seamless curricula by collaborating in 2+2+2 project grants; and

12

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer increased access to all

Pennsylvanians through online education courses and programs,

2

allowing students to build their academic credentials and

3

certifications while maintaining their work schedules and family

4

responsibilities; and

5

WHEREAS, Community colleges continue to graduate students in

6

many of the high-demand and high-growth industries vital to the

7

State's economy, particularly in health care, public safety,

8

energy and manufacturing, as well as many others; and

9

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed more than 1,000

10

articulation agreements to ensure that students seamlessly

11

transition from the community college to a four-year degree,

12

with more than 27,400 students transferring each year; and

13

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer individualized credit and

14

noncredit courses and programs that enhance the work force

15

pipeline and stimulate the Commonwealth's economy; and

16

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed 178 new or

17

redesigned programs in response to regional needs of employers

18

and work force trends; and

19

WHEREAS, More than 1,200 employers throughout this

20

Commonwealth have contracted with community colleges to provide

21

training for nearly 55,000 employees; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

23

month of April 2012 as "Pennsylvania Community College Month" in

24

Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens to recognize, appreciate

25

and support the contributions these institutions make to their

26

communities and our Commonwealth.
