| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the University of Pittsburgh on the occasion of the |
2 | 225th anniversary of its founding. |
3 | WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) began in a |
4 | humble log cabin in 1787 and is celebrating its 225th |
5 | anniversary this year; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Pitt has evolved into an internationally recognized |
7 | center of learning and research; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Pitt ranks fifth among all United States |
9 | universities in competitive grants awarded by the National |
10 | Institutes of Health (NIH), exceeding $800 million this year; |
11 | and |
12 | WHEREAS, Research funding alone supports approximately 29,000 |
13 | jobs and represents a return on investment of nearly $6 to every |
14 | $1 invested by the Commonwealth in the University of Pittsburgh; |

2 | WHEREAS, Pitt undergraduates have won four Rhodes |
3 | Scholarships in the last seven years. In addition, since 1995, |
4 | Pitt students were awarded six Marshall Scholarships, five |
5 | Truman Scholarships, five Udall Scholarships, one Churchill |
6 | Scholarship, thirty-five Goldwater Scholarships and one Gates |
7 | Cambridge Scholarship; and |
8 | WHEREAS, In four of the past five years, Pitt has been ranked |
9 | in the "Very Top Cluster" of the nation's public research |
10 | universities; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Pitt currently enrolls more than 26,000 Pennsylvania |
12 | residents and provides those Pennsylvania students with |
13 | substantial savings in tuition costs; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Pitt employs more than 13,500 Pennsylvania residents |
15 | on its five campuses; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Pitt has approximately 294,000 alumni residing in |
17 | Pennsylvania; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Pitt contributes more than $2 billion in spending |
19 | annually to the region's economy; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Pitt is ranked first among public institutions by |
21 | "Saviors of Our Cities: A Survey of Best College and University |
22 | Civic Partnerships" for dramatically strengthening the economy |
23 | and quality of life in its home communities; and |
24 | WHEREAS, Pitt was recently named a "best value in public |
25 | higher education" by Kiplinger's and The Princeton Review; and |
26 | WHEREAS, In addition to the economic contributors, the |
27 | University of Pittsburgh adds richness to the Commonwealth |
28 | through its broad array of athletic, cultural education, health |
29 | and social programs; and |
30 | WHEREAS, More than 4,000 students participate in community |

2 | WHEREAS, The University of Pittsburgh produced 37 new United |
3 | States patents in fiscal year 2011, bringing Pitt's 15-year |
4 | total to 441. Since fiscal year 2003, Pitt technologies have |
5 | formed the basis of 53 start-up companies; therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the |
7 | University of Pittsburgh on the occasion of the 225th |
8 | anniversary of its founding. |
