A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and congratulating Lehigh County on the 200th

2

anniversary of its founding.

3

WHEREAS, Lehigh County is celebrating its bicentennial

4

anniversary in 2012; and

5

WHEREAS, Lehigh County was formed by dividing Northampton

6

County into two counties on March 6, 1812; and

7

WHEREAS, Northampton Town, founded by William Allen, was

8

selected as the county seat and renamed Allentown in 1838; and

9

WHEREAS, Lehigh County was home to George Taylor, a signer of

10

the Declaration of Independence, whose namesake will be

11

memorialized at the George Taylor House and the George Taylor

12

Monument Plaza; and

13

WHEREAS, Lehigh County became an important railroad and

14

industrial center, especially in the manufacturing of cement,

steel and textiles; and

2

WHEREAS, Lehigh County has continued to grow over the last

3

two centuries, becoming a large and diverse metropolitan county;

4

and

5

WHEREAS, Lehigh County has transformed itself into a center

6

for finance, health care, education, technology and science; and

7

WHEREAS, Lehigh County is located within the Northeast

8

megalopolis, and is in close proximity to many of the largest

9

population centers in the United States, making it an important

10

commerce center; and

WHEREAS, A historical book has been created to document the

12

two-hundred-year history of Lehigh County; and

13

WHEREAS, A variety of events have been planned in celebration

14

of the county bicentennial; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and

16

congratulate Lehigh County on the occasion of the 200th

17

anniversary of its founding.
