| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating March 2, 2012, as "Read Across America Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, The citizens of this Commonwealth stand firmly |
4 | committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our students' |
5 | future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of |
6 | the future and their ability to compete in a global economy; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Community involvement in public education and |
8 | reading activities is an important way to foster educational |
9 | growth among children; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across |
11 | America Day" began in 1998 as the largest celebration of reading |
12 | ever held up to that point in our nation's history; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across |
14 | America Day" continues to be the nation's largest reading event, |
15 | with millions of readers participating in a variety of reading |

1 | activities; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The works of Dr. Seuss, the pen name of Theodor |
3 | Seuss Geisel, continue to inspire many people of all ages to |
4 | love reading; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The National Education Association's "Read Across |
6 | America" program is held annually on Dr. Seuss' birthday to |
7 | promote reading and adult involvement in the education of our |
8 | children; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in support of |
10 | the National Education Association's "Read Across America" |
11 | program, designate March 2, 2012, as "Read Across America Day" |
12 | in Pennsylvania and call on the citizens of this Commonwealth to |
13 | make an extra effort to encourage reading among children in |
14 | celebration of reading and Dr. Seuss. |
