| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of April 2012 as "Pennsylvania 8-1-1 Safe |
2 | Digging Month." |
3 | WHEREAS, As engineers, designers, excavators and homeowners |
4 | work to keep pace with this Commonwealth's unprecedented |
5 | economic development, it is important to minimize damage to |
6 | underground utility lines, danger to workers, environmental |
7 | pollution and loss of utility service to Pennsylvania citizens; |
8 | and |
9 | WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania One Call System, a utility service |
10 | information center celebrating more than 40 years of continuous |
11 | service to this Commonwealth, is key to preventing injuries and |
12 | damage when excavating; and |
13 | WHEREAS, This unique service provides easy, one-call |
14 | notification about construction and excavation projects which |
15 | may endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines while |

1 | promoting workplace and public safety, reducing underground |
2 | utility damage, minimizing utility service interruptions and |
3 | protecting the environment; and |
4 | WHEREAS, This vital service, which began with only six |
5 | utility companies in western Pennsylvania and the City of |
6 | Pittsburgh, now serves more than 100,000 excavators and 3,450 |
7 | critical infrastructure owners throughout this Commonwealth; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Each year, the Pennsylvania One Call System receives |
9 | more than 750,000 notification requests and transmits more than |
10 | six million notifications, providing protection to utility |
11 | companies, their employees and customers; therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the |
13 | month of April 2012 as "Pennsylvania 8-1-1 Safe Digging Month" |
14 | to encourage all excavators and homeowners of this Commonwealth |
15 | to dial 8-1-1 or 1-800-242-1776 before digging in order to "Know |
16 | What's Below," avoid injury, protect the environment, and |
17 | prevent millions of dollars in damages and to remind excavators |
18 | that three business days' notice is the law, for safe digging is |
19 | no accident, and that more information may be obtained by |
20 | visiting www.PAOneCall.org. |
