INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, FEBRUARY 29, 2012  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of May 2012 as "Motorcycle Safety and

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, The safety of all Pennsylvania motorists is an issue

4

of enduring consequence; and

5

WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to enjoy the use of

6

motorcycles while practicing utmost safety; and

7

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's economy benefits from more than

8

388,923 registered motorcycles and more than 828,000 licensed

9

motorcycle operators, all of whom are required to keep their

10

motorcycles inspected and obey laws relating to operator safety

11

and equipment; and

12

WHEREAS, Along with statistics on ownership and ridership,

13

the Department of Transportation reports that more than 3,756

motorcycle accidents occurred in this Commonwealth in 2009,

2

resulting in 204 fatalities; and

3

WHEREAS, Helmets were worn in 98 of those motorcycle

4

fatalities; and

5

WHEREAS, Despite inevitable incidents, motorcycle operators

6

continue to promote highway safety and encourage other motor

7

vehicle operators to recognize and participate in motorcycle

8

safety training; and

9

WHEREAS, Throughout the month of May, the Pennsylvania

10

Motorcycle Safety Program, Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward

11

Education of Pennsylvania (ABATE) and the Pennsylvania

12

Motorcycle Dealers Association (PMDA) are continuing their

13

advocacy of motorcycle safety; therefore be it

14

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

15

month of May 2012 as "Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month" in

16

Pennsylvania.
