A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of fallen Police Officer John David Dryer, who

2

died in the line of duty on December 19, 2011, in East

3

Washington Borough, Washington County.

4

WHEREAS, John David Dryer, 46, of Claysville, died December

5

19, 2011, as a result of a gunshot wound suffered in the line of

6

duty as a police officer for the East Washington Borough,

7

Washington County; and

8

WHEREAS, Born on February 5, 1965, in the western

9

Pennsylvania city of Washington, he grew up on the Avella farm

10

of his parents, JoAnn and John Dryer, and graduated from Avella

11

High School; and

WHEREAS, He earned undergraduate and doctor of veterinary

2

science degrees from Ohio State University and was employed as

3

an equine veterinarian throughout North America for Heinz Hitch

4

before returning to practice in Washington ten years ago; and

5

WHEREAS, Dr. Dryer owned and operated Chestnut Veterinary

6

Clinic in Washington, was a State Game Commission enforcement

7

officer and was certified in K-9 training and tracking with

8

bloodhounds; and

9

WHEREAS, Passionately interested in law enforcement and

10

emergency service, Dr. Dryer was a longtime member of the West

11

Middletown Volunteer Fire Department, where he held many

12

certifications, including smoke diver, emergency medical

13

technician and advanced car extraction; and

14

WHEREAS, He graduated from the police academy offered through

15

Indiana University of Pennsylvania at California University of

16

Pennsylvania, attending part time and maintaining his veterinary

17

practice; and

18

WHEREAS, He was a police officer for Donegal Township and for

19

Midway before joining the East Washington Borough Police

20

Department two years ago, all while continuing his veterinary

21

practice; and

22

WHEREAS, On the evening of December 19, 2011, Officer Dryer

23

observed a vehicle in East Washington Borough and initiated a

24

traffic stop on the highway; and

25

WHEREAS, Another officer arrived to assist, and shots were

26

fired by the driver of the stopped vehicle, hitting both

27

officers; and

28

WHEREAS, Officer Dryer died as a result of the assault; and

29

WHEREAS, The assailant was confronted and killed later that

30

evening by members of the State Police Special Emergency

Response Team after he fired at them and exited his house armed

2

with a gun; and

3

WHEREAS, Officer Dryer is survived by his son, Benjamin; his

4

parents, JoAnn and John Dryer; his brother, Donald; and his

5

sister, Elizabeth; and

6

WHEREAS, The courage and dedication of this brave police

7

officer and the professional veterinary services he provided to

8

the community in which he lived will long be gratefully

9

remembered; therefore be it

10

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

11

fallen Police Officer John David Dryer, who died in the line of

12

duty on December 19, 2011, in East Washington Borough,

13

Washington County.
