| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Dr. Maravene Loeschke, President of Mansfield |
2 | University. |
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Maravene Loeschke's more than five years of |
4 | dedicated service as President of Mansfield University will come |
5 | to a close on December 30, 2011; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Maravene Loeschke was born and raised in Baltimore, |
7 | Maryland, and earned a bachelor of science degree in theatre and |
8 | English and a master of education degree from Towson University |
9 | and a doctor of philosophy degree from Union Institute & |
10 | University in Cincinnati; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke began her career as an actress and |
12 | production assistant at Maryland Public Television, however, she |
13 | discovered a love of teaching and became a faculty member in the |
14 | theatre department at Towson University, teaching acting, mime |
15 | and feminist theatre. She began her administrative career as |
16 | chairperson of the theatre department. She served as dean of the |

1 | College of Fine Arts and Communication at Towson University for |
2 | five years. As dean she oversaw the award-winning architectural |
3 | renovation of the Fine Arts Center; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 2002, Dr. Loeschke was appointed provost of |
5 | Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke is the author of three books, a |
7 | monograph and numerous scholarly papers and articles including: |
8 | All About Mime (Prentice Hall), The Path Between (a historical |
9 | novel on Emily Dickinson's niece) and Sixteen Women Who Changed |
10 | Baltimore Theatre; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Although Dr. Loeschke chose to follow a career in |
12 | higher education, rather than in the professional theatre, she |
13 | remained active in the theatre. For twenty seasons she performed |
14 | each summer in the Maryland Arts Festival, including four one- |
15 | woman shows. She was a cast member in Maryland Public |
16 | Television's comedy series Crabs, Baltimore's version of |
17 | Saturday Night Live. She directed over 20 plays. Her play "5" |
18 | was professionally produced at the Theatre Project in Baltimore; |
19 | and |
20 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke is to be commended for her visionary |
21 | and diligent leadership as President of Mansfield University |
22 | over the past five years; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke provided the highest standards of |
24 | dedication to the mission of Mansfield University for the |
25 | ultimate benefit of students, faculty, staff, alumni and the |
26 | greater Mansfield community; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke maintained close relationships with |
28 | State and local legislators to advocate for the support of |
29 | Mansfield University and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher |
30 | Education; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke has tirelessly sought financial support |
2 | for the activities of Mansfield University from alumni and |
3 | friends; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Throughout her tenure as President of Mansfield |
5 | University, Dr. Loeschke provided service to the surrounding |
6 | community through board involvement in groups such as the Tioga |
7 | County Development Corporation, the Betterment Organization of |
8 | Mansfield, Hamilton-Gibson and the Northern Tier Regional |
9 | Planning and Development Commission; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke has strived to enhance cultural |
11 | activities in the community through involvement with and support |
12 | of groups such as Hamilton-Gibson and the Endless Mountains |
13 | Music Festival; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke's tireless and energetic attention to |
15 | excellence has strengthened and elevated the far-reaching |
16 | benefits of Mansfield University and its mission; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke, in all circumstances, was committed to |
18 | ensuring that students are at the forefront of Mansfield |
19 | University's mission; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Dr. Loeschke will be leaving and accepting the |
21 | position of President of Towson University, where she began her |
22 | career 30 years ago; therefore be it |
23 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Dr. |
24 | Maravene Loeschke, President of Mansfield University, for her |
25 | outstanding career in education and wish her continued success |
26 | in her future position with Towson University. |
