A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of United States Staff Sergeant Edward D.

2

Mills, Jr., who was killed in action on Thursday, May 26,

3

2011, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, during a combat

4

mission supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

5

WHEREAS, Edward D. Mills, Jr., was born on October 7, 1981,

6

in New Castle to Edward Mills, Sr., and Kathie Kirkwood

7

Greenawalt; and

8

WHEREAS, Edward Mills, Jr., was a 2000 graduate of Union High

9

School; and

10

WHEREAS, Edward Mills, Jr., entered the United States Army in

11

January 2005; and

12

WHEREAS, Edward Mills, Jr., was subsequently promoted to the

rank of staff sergeant and assigned to Fox Company,

2

(Pathfinder), 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 159th

3

Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault),

4

Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and

5

WHEREAS, On Thursday, May 26, 2011, while serving on his

6

third overseas tour of duty, Staff Sergeant Edward D. Mills,

7

Jr., made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when he was

8

killed in action while on a foot patrol in Kandahar Province,

9

Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his patrol with an

10

improvised explosive device; and

11

WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Mills' awards and decorations include

12

the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement

13

Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service

14

Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Arrowhead Device, the

15

Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,

16

the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the North

17

Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal, the Air Assault Badge, the

18

Parachutist Badge, the Pathfinder Badge and the Combat

19

Infantryman Badge; and

20

WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Mills was posthumously awarded the

21

Medal of Valor; and

22

WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Mills is survived by his widow,

23

Amanda Brenner; his mother and father, Kathie L. and Jeff

24

Greenawalt; his brothers, Jarod Mills and Lucas Greenawalt; his

25

sister and brother-in-law, Tiffany and Brian Cast; and extended

26

family and friends; therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

28

Staff Sergeant Edward D. Mills, Jr., who was killed in action on

29

May 26, 2011, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, while

30

supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and extend its condolences
