INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, NOVEMBER 3, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of November 2011 as "Lung Cancer Awareness

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in

4

this nation and this Commonwealth; and

5

WHEREAS, Lung cancer will be responsible for more American

6

deaths in 2011 than breast, prostate, colon, liver and kidney

7

cancers combined; and

8

WHEREAS, There are an estimated 221,130 new cases of lung

9

cancer and 430 deaths from lung cancer each day in this nation,

10

resulting in approximately 157,000 deaths annually, nearly

11

129,000 were caused by smoking; and

12

WHEREAS, There will be an estimated 10,900 new cases of lung

13

cancer and 7,960 deaths from lung cancer this year in this

Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer,

3

contributing to 80% and 90% of lung cancer deaths in women and

4

men, respectively; and

5

WHEREAS, Other causes of lung cancer include exposure to

6

cancer-causing substances or carcinogens, such as asbestos,

7

radon, uranium, arsenic and certain petroleum products; and

8

WHEREAS, Symptoms of lung cancer include chronic cough,

9

hoarseness, coughing up blood, weight loss and loss of appetite,

10

shortness of breath, fever without a known reason, wheezing,

11

repeated bouts of bronchitis or pneumonia and chest pain; and

12

WHEREAS, In the early stages of lung cancer, these symptoms

13

are usually absent, although when the symptoms occur, the cancer

14

is most often advanced; and

15

WHEREAS, There is currently no standard or cost-effective

16

screening procedure for lung cancer; and

17

WHEREAS, Funding for lung cancer medical research falls far

18

short of that for diseases with lesser fatality rates; and

19

WHEREAS, To help educate residents of this Commonwealth, the

20

American Lung Association of Pennsylvania supports designating

21

the month of November 2011 as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month"; and

22

WHEREAS, It is fitting and proper for this Commonwealth to

23

join this nation in designating the month of November 2011 as

24

"Lung Cancer Awareness Month" so that through better education,

25

more cases of lung cancer may be found in the early stages when

26

the chance of long-term survival is enhanced; therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

28

month of November 2011 as "Lung Cancer Awareness Month" in

29

Pennsylvania to promote greater public awareness, enhance

30

education, erase the stigma and increase early diagnosis of this

disease in order to reduce health costs and to save lives in

2

this Commonwealth.
