A RESOLUTION

Honoring the 75th anniversary of Fallingwater.

2

WHEREAS, Fallingwater was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for

3

the Kaufmann Family; and

4

WHEREAS, Fallingwater was created as a mountain retreat for

5

the Edgar J. Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh, owners of Kaufmann's

6

Department Store; and

7

WHEREAS, Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fallingwater in 1935;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, Frank Lloyd Wright is America's most famous

10

architect; and

11

WHEREAS, Fallingwater was featured on the cover of Time 

12

magazine in January 1938; and

13

WHEREAS, The Kaufmann family owned and used the home until

14

1963 when it was entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania

Conservancy; and

WHEREAS, The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has preserved

3

Fallingwater since 1963, with a major structural repair in 2002

4

strengthening Fallingwater's cantilevers to prevent collapse and

5

future deflection; and

6

WHEREAS, Fallingwater is the only major Wright-designed house

7

open to the public with its furnishings, artwork and setting

8

intact; and

9

WHEREAS, Four million people have visited Fallingwater since

10

1964 and, 160,477 people visited Fallingwater in 2010 alone; and

11

WHEREAS, Fallingwater is a Commonwealth Treasure and National

12

Historic Landmark and is being proposed by the United States as

13

a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural

14

Organization World Heritage Site; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor

16

Fallingwater on its 75th anniversary.
