INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 21, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of August 2011 as "Pennsylvania Produce

2

Month" in this Commonwealth.

3

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates more

4

than $185 million in revenues to the economy of this

5

Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, Approximately 4,300 farm families manage about

7

55,000 acres which produce more than 330,000 tons of vegetables

8

for fresh and processing use in this Commonwealth; and

9

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable growers are national

10

leaders in the production of pumpkins (3rd), processing snap

11

beans (6th), cantaloupes (7th), fresh market sweet corn (7th),

12

fresh market tomatoes (8th) and processing sweet corn (8th); and 

13

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are not only "Simply

Delicious" but also "Simply Nutritious" in providing important

2

vitamins, fiber and other dietary components that are essential

3

to a healthy, balanced diet; and

4

WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased

5

consumption of vegetables for both nutritional and disease

6

prevention purposes; and

7

WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in

8

abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers' markets,

9

roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this

10

Commonwealth during August; and

11

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry is committed to

12

using integrated pest management and other good agricultural

13

practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,

14

vegetables and vegetable products that are both nutritious and

15

safe; therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August

17

2011 as "Pennsylvania Produce Month" in this Commonwealth; and

18

be it further

19

RESOLVED, That all citizens be urged to enjoy this

20

Commonwealth's abundant supply of "Simply Delicious, Simply

21

Nutritious" fresh and processed vegetable products while

22

recognizing the industry's contributions to our economy and our

23

health.
