A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of United States Air Force Colonel (Retired)

2

Harry David Yoder, of Boyertown, Berks County, who died on

3

May 8, 2011.

4

WHEREAS, United States Air Force Colonel (Retired) Harry

5

David Yoder, of Boyertown, Berks County, died on May 8, 2011, at

6

the age of 95; and

7

WHEREAS, Colonel Yoder was a career Air Force officer and

8

served our country from 1942 through 1969 in World War II, the

9

Korean Conflict and Vietnam, as the branch transitioned from the

10

Army Air Corps to the United States Air Force; and

11

WHEREAS, A pilot, Colonel Yoder flew missions over the

12

Ploesti oil fields of Europe and in support of D-Day during

13

World War II and, after the war, he flew supplies and personnel

during the Berlin Airlift, among other missions; and

2

WHEREAS, His service awards include the Legion of Merit with

3

oak leaf cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross with eight

4

oak leaf clusters; and

5

WHEREAS, After retiring from the Air Force, Colonel Yoder

6

worked at Lockheed Martin from 1969 to 1971 and, while there,

7

wrote a position paper on cargo plane battle supply in the

8

Middle East which was used by General Norman Schwarzkopf during

9

the strategic planning for Persian Gulf I; and

10

WHEREAS, He then became president of Boyertown Auto Body

11

Works, which he owned from 1971 to 1988; and

12

WHEREAS, Colonel Yoder was a 1934 graduate of Boyertown Area

13

High School and a 1959 graduate of the University of Maryland,

14

was a member of numerous boards and committees in the Berks

15

County region, a longstanding Mason and a citizen leader of the

16

Boy Scouts of America, which awarded him the Good Scout Award in

17

2002 and the Beaver Award in 2004; and

18

WHEREAS, Colonel Yoder was well known for his philanthropy to

19

both local and national causes; and

20

WHEREAS, Son of the late Paul and Gertrude Landis Yoder,

21

Colonel Yoder is survived by his wife, Ardath; his son, the Rev.

22

Keith D. Yoder; his daughter, Natasha; and three grandchildren;

23

and

24

WHEREAS, Colonel Yoder served this Commonwealth by his life

25

and by his example; therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

27

United States Air Force Colonel (Retired) Harry David Yoder, of

28

Boyertown, Berks County, who died on May 8, 2011.
