A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the 40th anniversary of the Occupational Safety and

2

Health Administration.

3

WHEREAS, On December 29, 1970, President Richard M. Nixon

4

signed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which set forth

5

regulations for best practices for a safe and healthy work

6

environment in reaction to more than 100 years of hazardous and

7

deadly industrial practices; and

8

WHEREAS, The Occupational Safety and Health Act created the

9

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), under the

10

United States Department of Labor, to enforce stricter work-

11

place regulations to reduce job-related illnesses, injuries and

12

fatalities; and

13

WHEREAS, OSHA has strengthened regulations that limit

14

workers' exposure to hazardous chemicals and carcinogens,

15

including asbestos, inorganic arsenic, beryllium and cotton

dust, resulting in a massive reduction of chemically induced

2

illnesses and disease among workers; and

3

WHEREAS, According to OSHA, workplace fatalities have been

4

reduced by 65% since 1970; and

5

WHEREAS, As of 2009, OSHA reported that 12 workers die on the

6

job every day and 3.3 million men and women sustain work-related

7

injuries or illnesses; and

8

WHEREAS, OSHA helps ensure the health and safety of America's

9

work force; and

10

WHEREAS, A safe and healthy work force is the engine that

11

drives our strong American economy; and

12

WHEREAS, Fewer workplace accidents and diseases reduce the

13

number of workers' compensation claims and lower costs for

14

American businesses; and

15

WHEREAS, OSHA lends support to the private and public sectors

16

through OSHA Training Institute Education Centers, which offer

17

curricula to train compliance officers in an effort to create

18

and maintain safe and healthy workplaces; and

19

WHEREAS, OSHA began operations on April 28, 1971, and has

20

enforced standards for 40 years that protect 130 million

21

American workers annually; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

23

40th anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health

24

Administration and its efforts to protect American workers and

25

their families.
