A RESOLUTION

Encouraging The Pennsylvania State University to appropriately

2

recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of football coach

3

Joseph Vincent "Joe" Paterno, affectionately known by fans as

4

"Joe Pa," for his 62 years of service to The Pennsylvania

5

State University students and athletes and to the

6

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and recognizing September 3,

7

2011, as "Coach Paterno Day" in Pennsylvania.

8

WHEREAS, Joseph Vincent Paterno, as coach of The Pennsylvania

9

State University football team, holds the record for the most

10

wins by a college football coach; and

11

WHEREAS, On November 6, 2010, Coach Paterno achieved his

12

400th career win; and

13

WHEREAS, Only two other individuals have reached this

milestone in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

2

football; and

3

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno's career has been based on the

4

football philosophy of sound fundamentals, with an emphasis on

5

defense and team discipline; and

6

WHEREAS, This philosophy has led to outstanding achievements,

7

including 37 shutouts, 36 bowl game appearances, 24 bowl game

8

victories, 21 seasons with at least ten victories, 23 seasons

9

with a ranking in the top ten, seven seasons with a first-place

10

ranking, five perfect seasons and two national championships;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno has been inducted into the College

13

Football Hall of Fame; and

14

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno has emphasized high academic

15

expectations and a commitment to the individual educational

16

success of his players that ensure each athlete is a student

17

first; and

18

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno has achieved an NCAA graduation

19

success rate that is routinely among the highest in the nation;

20

and

21

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno has tirelessly worked to improve The

22

Pennsylvania State University, including efforts to provide

23

students with access to a premier library system; and

24

WHEREAS, Coach Paterno has worked to bring The Pennsylvania

25

State University and this Commonwealth to the forefront of

26

competition on academic and athletic fronts; therefore be it

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate

28

Joseph Vincent "Joe" Paterno and encourage The Pennsylvania

29

State University to appropriately recognize, and commensurate

30

with the recognition provided to football coaches who have

served with similar distinguished records, the efforts and

2

accomplishments of Coach Paterno; and be it further

3

RESOLVED, That, as the Penn State Nittany Lions Football Team

4

begins its 2011 season, September 3, 2011, be recognized as

5

"Coach Paterno Day" in this Commonwealth; and be it further

6

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

7

the Athletic Department of The Pennsylvania State University.
