INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, APRIL 11, 2011  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

  

1

Honoring the memory of law enforcement officers who gave their

2

lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth and

3

recognizing the memorial service in their honor in Soldiers'

4

Grove at the State Capitol Complex on May 2, 2011.

5

WHEREAS, The following law enforcement officers have made the

6

ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on the following dates:

7

Trooper Paul G. Richey, Pennsylvania State Police, January 13,

8

2010; Corporal Christopher Milito, Delaware River Port Authority

9

Police Department, January 16, 2010; Wildlife Conservation

10

Officer David Lynn Grove, Pennsylvania Game Commission, November

11

11, 2010; and

12

WHEREAS, The deaths of these law enforcement officers make a

13

total of 722 officers who, through the year 2010, made the

ultimate sacrifice since the beginning of law enforcement within

2

this Commonwealth; and

3

WHEREAS, A Venango County constable who died in April 1825 is

4

believed to be the first officer to have given his life in the

5

line of duty in this Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, "National Police Memorial Day" is held on May 15

7

each year; and

8

WHEREAS, The week containing May 15 is celebrated each year

9

as "National Police Week"; and

10

WHEREAS, On October 1, 1962, Joint Resolution 730 of the 87th

11

Congress of the United States was signed, authorizing the

12

President to proclaim May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers

13

Memorial Day"; and

14

WHEREAS, Twenty years passed before the first "National

15

Police Memorial Day" was recognized on May 15, 1982; and

16

WHEREAS, May 15 has continued to be observed annually in

17

memory of those police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice

18

in the line of duty; and

19

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Lodge of the Fraternal Order

20

of Police presents the annual memorial service in this

21

Commonwealth; therefore be it

22

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the

23

memories of the following law enforcement officers who gave

24

their lives in the line of duty in this Commonwealth in 2010:

25

Trooper Paul G. Richey, Corporal Christopher Milito and Wildlife

26

Conservation Officer David Lynn Grove; and be it further

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

28

memorial service in their honor in Soldiers' Grove at the State

29

Capitol Complex on May 2, 2011.
